Blue water is not so common in the Sea of China (coast of Vietnam).

For what you are asking, Mui Ne Beach near Phan Thiet would be the choice.

The beach is great, not many hagglers at all. A very laid back relaxed place. The water can be blue, subject to the time of year. No surf really, but popular with para-sailing and windsurfers.

As for nightlife... not a great deal. In Mui Ne itself, there are a couple of nightclubs. Fairly small... Maybe 60 to 80 people on a busy night. Beers are cheap and restaurants vary from $2 to $40 dinners.

A 15 minute taxi ride (about $4) into Phan Thiet will get you into the town centre where there are quit a variety of nightclubs.

You can take a bus (about $4 to $6) from Saigon which they say is 4 hours away, but it can be as many as six subject to the traffic. Alternatively, you can take the train to Phan Thiet, then taxi to Mui Ne. Another is to talk to your hotel staff that might find you a seat on a minibus which is about the same price as the bus, but normally takes no more than 3 hours to commute, and will take you right to the door of your accommodation.

Beach front 4 and 5 star resorts in Mui Ne start at around $40 per room per night subject to the time of year, with some exceeding $100.

There are budget hotels back from the beach from as little as $10 a night per person.

From Mui Ne, you can go on jeep tours or rent a motorcycle and visit the great sand dunes about 30 minutes to the north. (You can go sliding down the dunes with many kids on site happy to rent you boogie boards to do it.)

There are also a number of tours you can get a seat on for as little as $10 where you can visit Dragon Fruit plantations, salt farms, shrimp and fish farms and also out to some ancient temples.

Oh hoh... I'm Vietnamese. I've just spent my last week to go to a very beautiful beach in Nha Trang (it's not nah trang hehe) When you get there, ask the ppl there to take you to Hon Tam beach... it's an islet of Nha Trang... looks a bit like Hawaii. Nha Trang is in the South of Vietnam. If you go to the North, let's try Ha Long Bay or Do Son... Viet nam has an island named Phu Quoc which has recently been ranked the most beautiful tourist hub of Vietnam. Let's enjoy it!

Nha Trang, Danang and Phu Quoc, Vietnam all rate very highly with travelers.

I would also take note of the fact that weather should play into your final decision. The monsoon season generally runs from May-October in the south, not to mention the potential for typhoons, so you probably don't want to go during that time (the north is a little different with four seasons).

The Best Beaches

•Nha Trang: Vietnam's Ocean City is very crowded in the summertime with domestic tourists, but it's a great escape. The city has a few worthy sights -- otherwise a cluttered market town -- but there are some great new resorts and the best seafood going.

•Mui Ne Beach, Phan Thiet: Just a few hours from Saigon, Phan Thiet is the latest getaway for Saigon residents. There's a golf course designed by Nick Faldo, the seafood is good, and there are some great day trips to remote sand dunes and smaller fishing villages.

•Phu Quoc Island: Phu Quoc boasts vast tracts of interior forestland and far-flung beaches great for exploring by motorbike. For now there's just a small clutch of mid- to low-end resorts, but the times they are a-changin' and development is on the way. Get here fast.

To be honest, in my travels to Vietnam (southern part of country) I didn't find any great beaches or nightlife. I still had a great time, but don't go there expecting it to be like Thailand or Boracay (Philippines). It's a developing country that doesn't really cater to international travelers lookin for nightlife. Again though, Vietnam was one of my most memorable trips and I certainly don't regret going there.

The beaches are nice, but there is not any development along them. If you compare it to Pattaya or Phuket with seaside bars and cafes, there is not a lot to do.

The high end hotels are buying up a lot of beachfront, bulldozing the ghettos, and building expensive resorts. That's fine if you can afford $5 beers and $20 hamburgers.
