Question:
Are Cambodia and Laos colonies of Vietnam?

Aren't these two countries totally dominated by Vietnam, the way Lithuania and Latvia (for example) were dominated by Russia in Soviet times?

For sure, the governments of both Cambodia and Laos were installed by Vietnam, and I hear millions of illegal Vietnamese immigrants have flooded these two small countries and basically own them now...

Can anyone tell me the real situation?

What you were told is almost completely wrong.

Cambodia and Laos were occupied and controlled by Vietnam for a few years, but neither were ever Vietnam colonies. All three countries have been politically independent of each other for over two decades.

There are many thousands of ethnic Vietnamese who live in Cambodia and are legally Cambodians. Most live in Vietnamese communities within Cambodia. Much of the reason for the immigration was economic and political freedom as Cambodia no longer has a communist controlled government. Not as many Vietnamese immigrate to Laos though as Laos economy is significantly behind the other two countries as it transitions out of a central controlled (communist) economy.

All three countries have very good relationships with each other as of recent. There are some relatively minor squabbles about Phu Quoc island and dealing with the Mekong River. Unlike in the past, the leadership of these countries find it not necessary to shoot at each other over these issues.

As for Cambodia,

in 1979 Vietnamese troops overthrew the genocidal Pol Pot regime which was a huge benefit for Cambodia. Yes, they have set up a pro-Vietnamese government and were occupying Cambodia until 1989. When Vietnamese have gone there was still a turmoil until 1997 when the COALITION government was formed - so no, Cambodia is no longer influenced by Vietnam, it has an independent Government and the King, while Vietnam is still ruled by the Communist Party. Yes, there are about 1,000,000 Vietnamese that fleed to Cambodia from Vietnam and live mostly on the water, but no way, they are not influencing the political life.

Economically Cambodia is a free market economy while Vietnam follows the route of Governmentally controlled market economy similar to China maybe.

There are tensions between Cambodia and Vietnam over the Khmer Krom (Mekong delta) and Phu Quoc / Koh Tral island that have historically belonged to Cambodia before the French rule.

They are all separate countries today. They were all former French colonies. Until the Indochina war when France left and lost the North to Vietnam and then came the war for South Vietnam.

a million. It was a failed attempt to maintain Vietnam from choosing its very own government. The Vietnamese might have chosen Ho Chi Minh in 1956 and maximum possibly now no longer Ngo Dinh Diem! the comprehensive "containment of communism" concept grew to become into in keeping with an in intensity fake impact of the Vietnamese persons and their desire for independence. 2. It grew to become into as quickly as the style of complicated conflict for the Vietnamese thinking the undeniable fact that of the technological reward of the human beings. It grew to become into as quickly as the style of tricky conflict for the yankee electorate on the grounds that the Vietnamese did no longer desire to settle for "the reward of yankee-variety democracy." 3. We, the Vietnamese, did win the conflict. You, the human beings did no longer win the conflict via misapplication of wasteful and vicious military practices to what grew to become right into a political hardship. 4. usa of usa, as a rustic, has completely did no longer restoration the harm performed to the Vietnamese human beings and their atmosphere. This for sure shows how little usa cared relating to the persons of Vietnam interior the 1st area. try seeing the conflict from the two side for as quickly as - as you will locate by technique of utilising the two recommendations already given top right here - most of the human beings can't.
