Take the train north from Hanoi. dGet off at the last stop before the border town. There are vans at to continue up the mountain to Sapa.

Sa Pa or Sapa (Westernized spelling) is a town and district in the Lào Cai province in northwest Vietnam.

The town of Sa Pa is a well-known holiday resort, founded in 1922. It lies at about 1600 meters of altitude. The climate is moderate and rainy in summer (May—August), and foggy and cold with occasional snowfalls in winter.

At about 10 km distance of Sa Pa is the Hoang Lien Son mountain range with the highest mountain of Vietnam, Phan Xi Păng (Fansipan).

I know this is not the right answer, but please forget Sa Pa and go to the north of Laos - sure more landmines (not in the far north) but beatiful and much less tourists. If your in the north of Veitnam - Haiphong and surrounding islands are nice and can been seen relativley quickly ( a few days will do it).
