Ho Chin Minh City - Where are the prime districts?

1. Where are the prime districts in this city?
2. Best area/streets to stay for easy travelling around?
I will be there for holiday...the must go areas for affordable shopping, food, drinks.
Also any recommendation for good & cheap french food?

for a tourist unquestionably distric 1 is where to stay. whether it's a "flash" hotel like the caravel or rex or one of the many small but clean /safe minnies in the Pham Ngu Lao/ De Tham streets... just ask any cabbi at the airport to take you there [$4 - $5 A CAB !] you'll feel right at home in no time at all . all the info you need about where to shop eat and party will be right at your finger tips in the form of hotel desk info, travel shops, xich lo and raxi drivers, and of course other travelers... trust me , dont panic .. viet nam is VERY easy.

The prime districts in this city are = district 1 (Saigon market, Le thanh Ton st., Dong Khhoi, Nguyen Hue, Ben Bach Dang)

- district 5 (Cholon - Chinese town)
